The Malahat Region
The Malahat Area is located on the west side of the Saanich Inlet. It is largely based on the boundaries of the Helmcken, Malahat and Shawnigan land districts. Much of the western portion of is undeveloped. The Malahat Area district is sub-divided into 5 neighbourhoods: Cobble Hill; Malahat Proper; Mill Bay; Shawnigan Lake; and Sooke Lake.
Shawnigan Lake
A popular recreation destination, its population typically doubles during the summer, as the lake and village are summer vacation spots for residents of Vancouver Island.
Shawnigan Lake has no significant parkland outside of the park, a Provincial Park on the west side, and one small regional park in the village itself.
Several beaches and small day-use areas are scattered around the lake, and a large island in the south end of the lake, dubbed 'Memory Island' in honor of two lake residents that were lost in World War II, is one such area.
Mill Bay
Mill Bay is a commuter town of about 7,200 people located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada about 30 km (19 mi) north of Victoria, the capital. It is part of the Cowichan Valley Regional District.
Mill Bay was founded in the 1860s with lumber and milling as its primary industries, done at the mill on the bay.
It was named for the sawmill built in the area in 1861 by Henry S. Shepherd soon purchased by William Sayward. It is known for its ferry to Brentwood Bay on the Saanich Peninsula and the historic Malahat Drive, which is also a source of criticism due to frequent closures from either automobile accidents or weather conditions.
Cobble Hill
Cobble Hill is a small community located approximately 45 kilometres (28 mi) north of Victoria on Highway 1 in the Cowichan Valley Regional District, and is known for its agricultural surroundings, and for Cobble Hill itself, which gave the village its name. According to the 2016 census, there are 5,019 people living in Cobble Hill.
The town features many hiking trails and paths cover the hills and forests of this area, which is well known for its mountain biking opportunities. More recently the area has become famous for its vineyards, which have won awards for their wines.
The village centre contains basic shops and services including a post office, pub, coffee shop and a small grocery store. The village centre also has a couple of parks, a dog park, community centre and an independent school (K-7).
